New Year, New Click Cap

A Long Journey to Perfection

With 15 years of continuous improvement the click cap stands as a testament to innovation, perseverance, and relentless pursuit of perfection. What began as a mere concept in 2009, undergoing hundreds, if not thousands of iterations, has now, in 2024, transformed into a market-ready, game-changing innovation for beverage can.

2009-2017: The Formative Years

The early days of the click cap were a time of experimentation and foundational development. Early prototypes, crafted from two different plastic polymers, struggled to achieve airtight and watertight seals. Yet, these initial trials laid the groundwork for future breakthroughs. By 2017, the design had evolved into a two-part injection-molded closure. The acquisition of the patents by the Piech Family in 2017, jump started the next stage in the click cap's rapid transformation.

2017-2020: The Rise of the Click Cap

With a new team at the helm, the click cap entered a period of consistent improvement from 2017 and 2020. Major breakthroughs included a tamper-evident solution, instilling a newfound sense of security and trust among consumers. An internal polypropylene foil was also added, enabling the first watertight reseal of the click cap, proving that the convenience of bottles could be brought to cans.

2021: Achieving Airtight Resealability

A significant milestone in the click cap’s journey was reached in 2021. The production process was simplified to a single piece, injection-molded design, simplifying production and enhancing durability. This iteration achieved airtight resealability, capable of withstanding 35 psi of internal pressure. With its proof of concept completed, product testing was undertaken, and the opening was repositioned closer to the rim for better drinkability.

2023-2024: The Birth of Click Cap 2.0

After years of learning from the click cap 1.0, the decision to completely overhaul the design was made. In early 2023 the vastly improved click cap 2.0 prototypes were debuted. The click cap 2.0, introduced a user-friendly rotated opening mechanism that vastly improved every aspect of the drinking experience, greatly strengthened the reseal, and simplified the opening and closing functions. This redesigned version also saw advancements in pasteurization capabilities making it the first pasteurizable resealable option for cans. By the third quarter, the shell geometry was changed to align with the CDL-E industry standard, and the internal foil was optimized to facilitate mass production. Furthermore, the reseal pressure was improved to 60 psi which marked significant progress in maintaining beverage quality.

Q1 2024: The Click Cap 2.0 - A Culmination of Innovation

Through the end of 2023 rapid development continued until the click cap reached market readiness. The refinement of the closure geometry led to an easy open and reseal mechanism complete with venting capabilities and unparalleled resealability with the ability to hold over 90 psi of internal pressure, on par with unopened standard can ends. In addition, material improvements have led to optimal performance across the full range of drink temperatures and enabled production in any color a brand desires. The click cap 2.0. reflects a deep understanding of consumer preferences and industry needs, standing as a commitment to excellence in beverage packaging.
